What are the causes of chapped lips?
You need to understand that the skin on lips and around the eyes is different from the rest. While skin around the eye areas can draw oil from the face but the lips cannot. Also lips do not have any oil glands so they dont produce oil naturally, This is partially why lips get dry. When there is lip licking and breathing, it can cause skin inflammation. if it’s not that, then the sun and wind contribute to drying up of the lips.
Identify the ingredients that causes dry lips
We might be consuming food or drinks that have ingredients that can cause drying of the lips. For instance coffee can greatly dehydrate the skin, also you should read up the ingredients list of any lip product you use. The most common ingredient in lips products is petroleum which is pretty good if you have soft, smooth lips but if your lips are chapped, it isnt the best idea to use petroleum as they are not good at moisturizing already dry lips. Castor oil is also used in number of lip products but they also cause drying.
How to treat dry, chapped lips?
- Protect your lips from dehydrating liquids such as coffee, use straw instead
- Use lip products that have skin nourishing vitamins, minerals and essential oils.
- Try to exfoliate your lips at least once a week so that the dead skin cells are removed and fresh skin is revealed from underneath
