Makeup Crash Course: Step-By-Step Makeup Guide For Beginners

A full run down of all things makeup

If you feel overwhelmed visiting an online beauty store because of the thousand and one products on offer, and cannot even look towards a makeup expert for advice, then you are not alone. Learning how to do makeup is not an easy task- and the endless Youtube tutorials only add to the confusion! Which is why we decided to head back to the basics and conjure up a guide for makeup beginners so that you all can get that flawless face with minimum effort .

Primer

A primer is designed to create an even base for makeup application. It’ll help your makeup last longer and depending on the primer, it can help diminish the appearance of pores, balance redness and hydrate your skin. Different primers also have different finishes; like matte or dewy, to cater to your skin type and should be applied after your skincare routine and SPF.

We recommend using:

MAYBELLINE BABY SKIN INSTANT PORE ERASER PRIMER Rs999
To shop, click here.

Foundation and Concealer

Your face wouldn’t be complete without a foundation! Explaining foundations would take a whole other article, so we’re going to keep it short and succinct here! If you have oily skin, go for a matte foundation, and if you have dry skin, go for a dewy foundation. With liquid foundations, drop or pump out a bit on the back of your hands before using fingers or a brush to apply them on the face.

Concealer can be used to brighten the under eye, conceal dark circles and cover blemishes or marks. Concealers usually come in a medium to full coverage formula and can have a matte, dewy or radiant finish. Under eye concealers can be a bit brighter, but the one that you use to cover marks should be flesh toned. Click here to see our concealer guide.

We recommend using:

MAYBELLINE DREAM SATIN LIQUID FOUNDATION Rs1,649

L'OREAL PARIS INFALLIBLE 24H MATTE FOUNDATION Rs3,699

Contour

Contour is used to create shadows on the face, which will help to sculpt and chisel your features. Contour formulas tend to have a cool, brownish-greyish undertone to create the illusion of shadow. Typical areas you would contour are your cheekbones, nose, and forehead. Remember to draw a 3 on your face and blend it to perfection. No one likes harsh contour lines. Yikes!

We recommend using:

MAKEUP REVOLUTION HD PRO POWDER CONTOUR LIGHT MEDIUM Rs2,300
To shop, click here.

Blush and Highlight

Add healthy color and a subtle glow to your skin with a classic blush and highlighter. As far as highlighters go, put them on areas where the sun would naturally hit your face (your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin). When it comes to blush, apply some to the apples of your cheeks—and remember to smile while doing so!

We recommend using:

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS DREAM GLOW KIT Rs10,619
To shop, click here.

ASTRA MAKEUP BLUSH ME ALL OVER Rs1,250
To shop, click here.

Eyebrows

If you want the look of fuller brows, you’ll definitely need some brow powder. In addition, get your hands on a spooly brush, an angled brush, a brow pencil, and some clear brow gel. Here is our guide for the perfect brows.

We recommend using:

BOURJOIS BROW PALETTE Rs2,400
To shop, click here.

Eyeliner

Depending on the look you’re going for, there are hundreds of different eyeliners to choose from. There are gel liners, marker liners, pencil liners, and the list goes on.. If you want precision, go for a liquid eyeliner. If you want to go for a smudgy look, get your hands on a pencil liner. Here is our guide on eyeliner application according to your eye shape.

We recommend using:

ASTRA MAKEUP 12H PEN EYELINER Rs1,250
To shop, click here.

Mascara

The final step in your eye makeup application routine? That should be mascara! It will give the appearance of thicker, fuller lashes and you can opt for a normal or waterproof formula. Here is guide on how to apply mascara with perfection.

We recommend using:

RIMMEL VOLUME COLORIST MASCARA Rs1,600
To shop, click here.

Lipstick and Lip Liner

A lip pencil is used to line your lips to prevent your lipstick from bleeding. It can also be used to contour your lips to give the appearance of a fuller pout, and it also helps your lipstick to last longer. Using a lip liner before lipstick also helps to shape the lips and make lipstick application easier.

We recommend using:

GOLDEN ROSE DREAM LIPS LIPLINER Rs591

GOLDEN ROSE GR LIPSTICK Rs456
