Glycolic Acid Is THE Chemical Exfoliation!

If you are confused about exfoliation, today is your lucky day! as we are talking about exfoliation in great detail. So read on and get educated!

Exfoliation is basically the removal of dead skin, debris and pore clogging material from the skin to reveal brighter, newer skin from underneath.  Exfoliation has two forms, physical & chemical. Physical exfoliation is when you use a product that has grains or abrasive material in it and that manually removes the dead skin whereas chemical exfoliation is when acids are used that penetrates deeper into the skin to clear it up. Acids basically remove the top layer of the skin by weakening the lipids that glue them together, in this way the dead cells are removed and fresh skin is revealed. Acids used for exfoliation includes: lactic acid, salicylic acid & glycolic acid.

What is Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is AHA which stands for alpha hydroxy acid, it basically comes from sugarcane and is found in many skincare products like cleansers, serums, moisturisers and eye creams. Glycolic acid penetrates deeper into the skin and dissolves the excess sebum and dead skin cells.

Its benefits

Glycolic acid not just clears away dead skin, it also lightens the discoloration on the skin caused by sun and age spots. Over time usage also diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Glycolic acid helps the skin with the elimination of blackheads, whiteheads and acne   by making sure that the pores are clean and not clogged. The texture of the skin is reformed by it as it brightens the skin and make it more refined.

Its side effects

There are no major side effects to using glycolic acids but you need to understand that certain ingredients need to be used carefully with this acid. Retinol or vitamin C when used with glycolic acid will make the skin sensitive and prone to dryness. Afterusing glycolic acis, it is important to keep your skin hydrated, for that you can use products that have ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and peptides. Glycolic acid also makes the skin sensitive to the skin therefore it is important to using sunscreen after it or stay away from the sun.
