What exactly are dark spots?

Dark spots also called hyperpigmentation occur on the skin when it produces more melanin than usual. Melanin is basically the element that gives our skin, eyes and hair the colour they have. Dark spots can range from light brown to dark brown. According to Waqas Ashraf “dark spots also called pigmentations, starts off with brown pigmentation, when it gets dark, we call them mature or dark pigmentation.” These spots vary in size and can appear in others areas of the body than the face.

Causes of dark spots

There are multiple causes of dark spots:

1.Sun Damage

Exposure to the sun will lead to the development of dark spots, areas that are exposed to the sum are face, arms, hands, legs, feet, this is where the spots will appear.

2. Hormonal changes

Due to hormonal changes, dark spots can appear, this usually happens during pregnancy.

3. Side effects of medication

Certain medication can increase skin pigmentation which can lead to dark spots.

4. Inflammation

Dark spots may appear on skin when an inflammation occurs, which can happen for multiple reasons like eczema, psoriasis.

5.Irritation

At times cosmetic products can cause irritation on the skin which can lead to the development of dark spots.

How to remove dark spots

According to Waqas Ashraf,

“Its better to tackle brown spots so that they dont convert to dark spots, brown spots are easy to manage, you can even tackle them with home remedies”.

Here are some ways dark spots can be removed.

  • Creams

There alot of creams available in the market with ingredients such as retinol or alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin and promote the new skin growth.

  • Home remedies 

There are certain home remedies that can tackle dark spots for instance regularly applying aloe vera gel can get rid of them slowly but surely. Secondly incorporating vitamin B-3 in your diet will also help with the spots.

  • Chemical peels

Chemical peel is when a solution is applied to the skin that exfoliates the surface, promoting new skin growth. It will fade away the dark circles eventually.

  • Microdermabrasion

This is a procedure where a dermatologist uses a device to remove the outer layer of the skin. It will promote collagen growth and reduce the spots.

  • Laser treatment

There are multiple laser treatments that can be done but the most common one is the pulse light laser that breaks up the spots.
