Are Parabens In Skincare Products Harmful?

There is alot of confusion regarding parabens in skincare. Some studies show they are cancer causing while others show no relation between the two. Despite so many different opinions about parabens, there are certain brands that steer clear from them and make paraben free products. Keep on reading to find out all about it.

What are Parabens

Basically parabens are preservatives added in skincare & beauty products to prevent them from bacteria, fungi etc so that the product lasts a long time. A longer shelf life means that more preservatives are added. The most common parabens are: methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, and propylparaben.

Why are Parabens harmful

In 2004, British scientist found parabens in the breast of 19 out 20 women, this signifies that they have the capability to penetrate deeper into the tissues and remain there for quite some time. Parabens also have the capability to act like estrogen – which is a female hormone and if found in large amount can cause cell division and lead to tumor. There still isnt a conclusive study that states that parabens do cause cancer.

Parabens and the environment

Parabens are not only proven to be harmful to humans but studies have shown it can seriously impact the environment as well. Research revealed that parabens were found in the bodies of some marine mammals. The parabens present in our skincare & beauty products ends up in the ocean thus causing harm to the marine life.

Should you completely stop using Parabens

You really dont have to go down an extreme route because the percentage of parabens present is usually small moreover there have been other preservatives that have been introduced so the use of parabens in skincare products isnt a necessity any more. As a consumer you need to make an educated decision on what is more important to you, whether these parabens are a cause of worry or not. There are plenty of alternatives available that are completely free from parabens.
