With thousands & thousands of beauty products, it gets incredibly difficult to understand what to use & how it benefits us. I vow to make beauty fun & easy for you all.
Hi, I’m Anam Ilyas, one of the Beauty Experts at Beauty Hooked.
Today, we are going to get into all the nitty-gritty details about makeup primers, whether you really need them & what we recommend!
What is primer & how does it help?
Makeup is an art & just as artists prepare their canvas before painting, we do the same with our skin. You have to prepare your skin for all the makeup products you plan to apply to your face for a finer finish.
Primers are created to cater to multiple ‘factors’ like dryness, uneven texture, open pores or even color correct our skin. New & improved formulas are entering the market now, promising longevity to your makeup. Isn’t that exciting?🎉
What is the best way to apply a primer?
First & foremost, apply sparingly. No, the more you apply, the more it helps isn’t the case here (or anywhere really). God has blessed us with the best blending tool for free, our fingers! So use sparingly & with fingers blend it into your skin. Now the question arises of when to apply. It’s rather easy, after skincare (during the day, after SPF too) & before makeup.
The primer is applied in certain areas based on what you want to disguise. Want to use a hydrating primer but only have dry cheeks? apply on cheeks only & nowhere else. Open pores but only in t-zone? use pore fading primer only in the t-zone & no need to apply on the entire face.
Expert tip: Silicon/pore minimizing primers should be pushed into the skin with tapping motions as opposed to dragging it or blending with circular motions.
Types of primers & what to pick?
Color-correcting, pore blurring, texture perfecting, hydrating, mattifying & so many more options. Analyze your skin after wearing makeup, see what you wish looked better, less visible pores? foundation clinging to a dry patch? skin still looking dull or redness peeking through? Once you have your concern is clarified, pick a primer based on that. If you can’t pick any concern, you do not need a primer unless you’re aiming to make your make-up last. Here’s our recommended list for each concern;

Common Mistakes To Avoid
Applying a primer prepares our skin for makeup application BUT you need to give one whole minute if not more to let the primer dry completely & settle in your skin. This helps you to avoid patchiness and pilling.
Another mistake to avoid is to apply the wrong kind of primer, hence, extremely important to analyze what your skin type is, the concern is & then pick a primer.
Blaming a foundation for a bad looking skin or stopping to use primers altogether. Not all products work well with each other. It’s a trial & error process. You trust your foundation & know it looks good? Great! one primer didn’t work with it? No worries! Find another. Sometimes you end up being lucky & finding the perfect match whereas other times you have to make an effort & find the perfect combination.
Do we really need primers?
If you’re happy with how your makeup looks & don’t feel the need to try out a primer? Your call. A lot of makeup artists (not all) love using them & have their favourites. We would recommend you to definitely try it out once.
