Face Scrubs & Exfoliators

Scrubbing or Exfoliation is very important part of skincare routine. Whether you’re using a Face Scrub or an exfoliant in any form, either way, your skin with achieving that radiance you’ve been craving for.  When you think about using an exfoliator, you probably imagine a face wash with tiny beads in it. Possibly an apricot face scrub you’ve had in your shower for ages? While this type of ever-popular exfoliator is great, it isn’t the only way to effectively scrub your face. In fact, they could be inflicting more harm than good on your complexion.

SO, why would this happen? Want to know more about other types of facial scrubs? Confused (or even intimidated) by the idea of a chemical exfoliator? Don’t worry — we’re here to explain it all!

WHAT IS A FACE SCRUB

Face scrub is water, oil or cream based formula with a physical exfoliator to leave the skin smooth by removing dead skin cells.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACE SCRUB & AN EXFOLIATOR

Exfoliation is basically used to remove the dead skin cells that are oldest on the outermost surface of the skin. While scrubbing is to rub something on the skin to clean them, typically with a brush and water. Mostly these two terms are spoken interchangeably.

WHY SHOULD YOU USE A FACE SCRUB

  • to get smooth skin
  • to get radiant and glowy skin
  • to remove dead skin cells
  • to increase absorption of serums /moisturizer for maximum effect

What to do before Face Scrub

Double cleanse your face. First using a cleanser to remove all makeup and oil-based impurities and then with face wash to remove dirt and germs with lukewarm water.

HOW TO USE A FACE SCRUB

Face scrub is gently massaged into the skin in two directions. Firstly, move horizontally by moving in circular strokes from nose to ear temples and then vertically by moving in a circular motion from chin to forehead. never push your skin downward. Wash with lukewarm water. gIve a final rinse with cold water to close the pores

Frequency of Face Scrub

Face scrub should not be used more than 2 times a week.

TYPES OF EXFOLIATORS

PHYSICAL EXFOLIATORS

A cleanser with tiny particles which can be felt by bare hands which help to buff and slough the dead skin cells (debris) from the surface of the skin. It is best for dry flaky skin.

Example of some of the most common physical exfoliation ingredients:

  • Plastic microbeads (more on these later)
  • Jojoba beads
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Bamboo beads
  • Nuts (mainly walnut and almond)
  • Baking soda
  • Rice powder
  • Facial cleansing brush (Neutrogena wave, Clarisonic )

PRECAUTION WITH PHYSICAL EXFOLIATORS

Physical exfoliators are harsh for skin with acne and sensitivity issues. e.g for acne prone skin, it may collect the bacteria and transfer them to other parts of the face giving a reason for more breakouts as during exfoliation and scrubbing pores are open.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIATORS

Exfoliator with chemical formula that helps to penetrate the bonds that dead skin have on living skin cells. you can say it acts like a Pac man on our skin who eats up all dirt, debris, and that dead skin which has clogged up the pores causing breakouts, blemishes, whiteheads, and blackheads. Although it is not visible to the naked eye it can be felt after washing the face.

TYPES OF CHEMICAL EXFOLIATORS

Chemical Exfoliators are two types:

  • AHAs
  • BHAs

ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS

They are derivative of natural ingredients which are water soluble. They act by enhancing moisture level of the skin, reducing the fine lines and wrinkles, smooth out rough texture of skin and also improve uneven skin tone of dull skin. For Example

  • glycolic acid from sugar cane
  • lactic acid from milk
  • malic acid from apples
  • citric acid from citrus
  • tartaric acid from grapes
BETA  HYDROXY ACIDS

BHAs are oil soluble and work great for oily skin as well as for combination skin with oily T zone. they have calming and soothing properties so they are excellent for the sensitive and acne-prone skin. Examples of BHAs are:

  • Salicylic acud
  • beta hydroxybutanoic acid
  • tropic acid
  • trethocanic acid
